The National Research Council of Italy (CNR) is the largest public research institution in Italy, the only one under the Research Ministry performing multidisciplinary activities. CNR’s mission is to perform research in its own Institutes, to promote innovation and competitiveness of the national industrial system, to promote the internationalization of the national research system, to provide technologies and solutions to emerging public and private needs, to advise Government and other public bodies, and to contribute to the qualification of human resources.
The Istituto per le Tecnologie Didattiche (ITD) is a research Institute of the National Research Council (CNR) of Italy, founded in 1970. It has two branches in Genova and Palermo.
The ITD is the only Italian institute exclusively devoted to research in the field of educational technology. The institute carries out strongly interdisciplinary basic and applied research studies. In fact, its researchers integrate contributions and models developed in various disciplines, such as computer science in its broader sense, cognitive science, pedagogy, school curricula subjects.
Giuseppe Città - Researcher at the Institute of Educational Technology of the National Research Council of Italy (ITD-CNR). His research activities focus on the relationship between Cognitive Science and Technology Enhanced Learning. His interests focus on the cognitive processes involved in technology-mediated learning and the cognitive aspects involved in learning design phases. Specific areas of application of these interests are the context of serious games, video games and virtual worlds. He is also involved in research focused on clarifying the relationship between computational thinking, spatial skills and embodied cognition. He has been involved in several national and international projects, has several publications in the area of the topics described above, and has been one of the editors for the research topic "Artificial Intelligence for Education" in the journal Frontiers in Education.
Mario Allegra - Director of Institute of Educational Technologies of CNR. He has participated in promoting and carrying out research projects concerning ICT and their application in education and training contexts. He is in charge of several research projects both national and international and he is author/co-author of more than 100 scientific papers. He is a member of the editorial boards of international scientific journals. He has been a contract professor at the University of Palermo and consultant for the Italian Ministry of research.
Valentina Dal Grande - Senior technologist at CNR-ITD. She has 20 years of experience in management and administration of projects financed with public funds (national and international). She was auditor in several projects funded by 6 and 7PQ and by the Sicilian Region-FSE. She is a member of the national working group for the management of CNR projects financed by next generation EU funds (PNRR).
Manuel Gentile - Researcher at the Institute of Educational Technology of the National Research Council of Italy (ITD-CNR). His research activity concerns the definition of methodologies and environments to support learning and teaching. He has been involved in several national and international research projects to design and implement mobile learning platforms, educational games, and systems for collaborative production, sharing, and organization of learning resources. Currently, he focuses on embodied cognition, serious game design, and Artificial Intelligence application in education. He is a member of the CNR National Observatory on AI and co-responsible for the AI for Education and Education for AI thematic table. He has several scientific publications in the fields of Serious Games and about applying AI techniques in the design and implementation of the Serious Games.
Dario La Guardia - CNR-ITD Technologist. His main research interests concern the use of serious game and ICT in educational context. He is involved in several research projects including the European projects. In these projects, he worked on the design and implementation of: mobile learning platforms, serious games and tools to support learning of people with special needs.
Simona Ottaviano - Psychologist. She works as researcher at the CNR-ITD. Her main research interests are related to the development and design of training models in Lifelong Learning, teachers training and utilization of ICT in the educational and teaching process. She is involved in several research projects including the European projects.
